One of the most critical learning experiences Doug encountered as an entrepreneur was the inability to grow his company. Like most entrepreneurs, he thought it had to be his way; after all, he had been successful in the past, quickly grown an organization, and been profitable. Therefore, his way had to be the best way. Finally, the growth had stalled, and success wasn’t coming as easy as it once had been.
Doug took his company’s management team on a retreat and they read the book “ Good to Great” by Jim Collins. It was then he had his eureka moment - he realized if he didn’t get out of his own way, the company couldn’t grow. He had become his own worst enemy. It was at this moment that he changed his management style. Over time he learned to empower his direct reports and senior management team.
